Ask candidate to self-evaluate himself on the range from 1 to 10 on the specific skillset. Example:
Would you please access your own skillset of these 3 qualifications from 1 to 10?
Risks of such approach:
Risks of such approach: In some cultures or specific scenarios candidates would do their best to pass through this stage. So this approach should be used only when you have automated way of sourcing, like many inbound candidates.
In all other cases we should use 2nd Approach - Indirect.
For the indirect approach we still try to figure out top 3 skillsets for the candidate but we do it conversational way without asking direct questions.
Example #1:
Hey dear Jon, we are super glad you reached us out we see Python on your profile and NodeJS. Would you consider youself more as an Python lover or NodeJS?
In such scenario candidate would not assume that we look specifically for NodeJS lead and he will have to answer his honest opinion on the suggested technologies and his experience, we can follow-up with second example .
Example #2:
Hey Robert, we are happy you’re interested in the position, would you tell us what would be ideal role composition and technologies to work with?
If candidate avoids the direct answer by saying: “I like all technologies” you should still push to get a more precise answer.
At the self-evaluation stage the main goal is to filter all the candidates best on the must-have skills we require for the position. We need to find a way to softly access the honest capabilities of the candidate of the top 3 skills which are set during the Job Description setup.
